It boggles the mind! We are less than 30 days away from the end of a decade. Every year I take plenty of time to think about the upcoming year. When the beginning of a year is also the beginning of a decade, I think it is worth taking a month to prepare.

To that end, we will take the next several weeks to think together about the decade in front of us. Each week, I will introduce a particular angle to view the upcoming decade and provide you with a tool to do your own work in setting the stage for January 1, 2020.

This first week, I want to encourage you to do a Whole Life Assessment of where you are as you end this decade. Personally, I think this is a worthwhile exercise to do at the end of every year, if not more often. The idea behind this assessment is to take an honest look at where you stand right now across all of the vital categories of life. It may seem to you to be an exercise in stating the obvious, but I have found with many of the people that I have coached, that this assessment is an eye-opener. When they step way back, they see their reality through a perspective that is different from the weeds of everyday living. Some people are pleasantly surprised and realize how fortunate they are. Others come to realize areas that they have been neglecting for too long. The assessment serves as a wake-up call.

The Whole Life Assessment, which you can access through the link at the end of this post, looks at 8 different categories. With each category, you give a ranked score between 1 and 10, and then write what I call, a State of the Union paragraph, which is an honest description of where you currently stand in that particular area.

The value of the assessment comes through honesty, reflection, and action. It begins by choosing to be gut-honest with yourself. Whether you choose to share your responses with anyone else is up to you, as long as you decide to be honest. Next, value comes as you take time to reflect on your assessment. What does it tell you? Where should you shout in gratitude and where should you prepare to make major changes? Finally, the assessment is an opportunity to take action. With good planning, help from others, and a large dose of commitment, we can grow and improve in any area of our life. What better time to choose to make these changes than at the beginning of a new decade!

On January 1, 2020, I want to be ready to go. Let’s grow together!
