For the first 5 days of creation, God created the world and declared His creation “good.” On the sixth day, when God created man and woman, He upped the ante, exclaiming them “very good.” Think about the implications of this. We stand out in God’s creation beyond even the grandeur of the moon and the stars, the eagle, and the Grand Canyon. God elevates us to the highest pinnacle of creation. We are His crowning act of creation!

We don’t act like this though, do we? We treat one another as rather mundane. A C.S. Lewis quote that I read almost 40 years ago has stuck with me indelibly. He said,

“It is a serious thing to live in a society of possible gods and goddesses, to remember that the dullest and most uninteresting person you can talk to may one day be a creature which, if you saw it now, you would be strongly tempted to worship, or else a horror and a corruption such as you now meet, if at all, only in a nightmare. All day long we are, in some degree, helping each other to one or other of these destinations. It is in the light of these overwhelming possibilities, it is with the awe and the circumspection proper to them, that we should conduct all our dealings with one another, all friendships, all loves, all play, all politics. There are no ordinary people. You have never talked to a mere mortal.”(The Weight of Glory)

According to Lewis, a special holiness accompanies every one of our normal daily interactions. Each person we encounter is precious to God and therefore should be precious to us.  Each interaction has eternal consequences.

How might we put this weighty truth into practice in our day-to-day lives?

  1. First, receive the truth that you are extraordinary in God’s eyes. You may not feel that way. I certainly don’t. But sometimes our feelings mislead us. Our worth is not based on how we feel but in who created us. When we feel ordinary, we need to choose to see as God sees.
  2. Next, treat those closest to you as extraordinary.By an act of the will, let their faults melt into thin air and magnify their greatness. Put this into practice with those closest to you by complimenting them genuinely each day for the next week.
  3. Embrace the call to move those we encounter each day towards good through the way we treat them.Visualize Christ in those you encounter throughout the day. See beyond the person today, to who the person may become one day. A single encounter can change the trajectory of a life forever.
