Today matters. I don’t know all that this day will bring, but I know that yesterday is past and tomorrow will come soon enough. Today is what counts.

Most of us who call ourselves Christians have no problem believing in a God who bears our burdens, forgives our sins, loves us, and is able to save us. At least conceptually. What is harder to grasp is that God does these things for us daily. He is a daily God. He is God for you and me today! The God of the Bible is not some grandfatherly clockmaker who set the universe in motion and watches from afar. He is intimately involved in every moment. Oh, how our lives would change if we would embrace the constant presence of God in each minute!

He is God of today!

God made this day as a gift to be enjoyed.

“This is the day that the Lord has made. I will rejoice and be glad in it” (Ps 118:24). Our circumstances may be hard and full of pain. Yet, still, we have the gift of this day. In the hardest days, we can find reasons to be thankful. Gratitude is a habit that must be cultivated on a daily basis.

He is God of today!

This morning He is here to bear our burdens.

“Praise be to the Lord, to God our Savior, who dailybears our burdens” (Ps 68:19). He is waiting to care for you.  As the father waited by the window for his prodigal son, our Father waits for us, longing to pour out His love for us, longing to bear our burdens. When my children were young, they would come to me with a problem they couldn’t solve. Often, I would simply say, “no problem, I will take care of it.” They would run off and never give it another thought. I bore their burden. Our God is able to bear our burdens today if we will only trust in Him. Nothing is too big for Him. Nothing is too hard for Him.

He is God of today!

He brings His mercy fresh each day.

“His compassions never fail. They are new every morning, great is His faithfulness” (Lam 3: 22-23). The failures and shortcomings of yesterday have been washed away. The slate has been cleaned. Daily He avails Himself to forgive our sins, to pour out His mercies. Will we accept His forgiveness?

He is God of today!

Throughout this day, He walks beside us.

“You discern my going out and my lying down; You are familiar with all of my ways. Before a word is on my tongue You know it completely, O Lord” (Ps 139: 3-4). Whether we realize it or acknowledge it, God is our constant companion today.

What will we do with this God of today? Will we go on our way oblivious to His daily presence and protection? Will we miss out on His blessings as we muddle through the ordinariness of today? Or will we cry out with the Psalmist, “This is the day that the Lord has made. I will rejoice and be glad in it.”

‘Doodling’ this one Tommy – what a refreshing encouragement – we are given new grace each day – and a reminder that God is with us in things that feel overwhelming/ordinary
